Allison Pari, a communication and history graduate, pursued her long-time passion for veterinary medicine after a pivotal conversation with her parents in 2017. Despite no prior science background, she returned to school for prerequisite classes, gained hands-on experience through volunteering, and worked full-time while studying. Her determination paid off when she was accepted into UC Davis, the nation鈥檚 top veterinary school. Pari credits her journey to faith, hard work, and the support of her family and mentors, proving it鈥檚 never too late to chase a dream.
Allison Pari didn鈥檛 intend for her comment to be taken seriously.
Pari graduated in 2012 from The 国产aa福利 with a degree in communication. She went on to study history at Cal State Northridge. So, when she told her mother, Cheryl, in 2017 that given a do-over, she would have majored in science and pursued veterinary medicine, Pari wasn鈥檛 plotting a return to school. She was simply reflecting on what might have been.
Cheryl didn鈥檛 see it that way.
鈥淎llison Nicole, if you want to be a vet 鈥 be a vet!鈥 she said.
So began Pari鈥檚 four-year journey toward finally studying something that had always been her passion. She returned to TMU for prerequisite classes, volunteered with animal organizations 鈥 working with guide dogs and feeding baby raccoons 鈥 and applied to UC Davis, the top veterinary school in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report.
Pari鈥檚 diligence 鈥 and willingness to begin again 鈥 paid off in January when she learned she鈥檇 been accepted at Davis, where she鈥檒l start classes this summer.
鈥淚鈥檓 just amazed that God has given me all these opportunities along the way,鈥 Pari says. 鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 be so bold as to say that God wants me to be a vet because, ultimately, only He knows what His plan is for my life. I鈥檓 just thankful for the opportunities He鈥檚 given me.鈥

Pari has always loved animals. Growing up, her family kept a long list of pets ranging from cats, rats, and dogs to a gecko named Grace.
She owned stuffed animals, too, sometimes pretending to inject them with plastic syringes before applying a bandage and assuring them everything would be OK.
Make-believe was fun, but Pari never saw a serious future as a veterinarian.
Instead, she studied print media at TMU before pursuing a graduate degree in history at Cal State Northridge. At the time, her goal was to teach, but her heart wasn鈥檛 in it.
During that decisive conversation in 2017, Pari鈥檚 mother told her it wasn鈥檛 too late to chase a dream. Pari鈥檚 father, Ian, agreed.
鈥淢y dad always said, 鈥榊ou could choose not to pursue being a vet because you feel like it鈥檚 too late. But, four years from now, you鈥檒l still be 33 鈥 either with a veterinary degree or without one.鈥欌
Pari decided to go for it. She researched what it would take to get into vet school and surveyed her options. Her first step was enrolling in a chemistry class at TMU. 鈥淚鈥檇 never taken chemistry in high school, so I knew nothing about it,鈥 Pari says. 鈥淚 took it, and it was like, 鈥極h, I can do this.鈥 So I kept going.鈥
At times, Pari鈥檚 schedule was relentless. She was simultaneously working full-time as an executive assistant at Master鈥檚, finishing her graduate degree at CSUN and taking science classes. But she鈥檇 grown accustomed to balancing work and school, and it helped, she says, that her boss at TMU, Dr. John Stead, was supportive and flexible.
Pari planned lunch breaks at odd hours to attend class. Sometimes, she left work early for an evening lab and returned to the office later that night to finish her shift. Then, she drove home and did homework for courses like organic chemistry and microbiology.
Her smarts and dedication caught the attention of Dr. Joe Francis, dean of TMU鈥檚 School of Science, Mathematics, Technology & Health.
鈥淪he understood the value of education,鈥 Francis says, 鈥渁nd she was gifted intellectually and disciplined and excited about God鈥檚 creation.鈥
As an undergrad at TMU, Pari had grown in her knowledge and love of Scripture (鈥淭MU solidified my understanding of the gospel and the Bible through chapel and Bible survey classes,鈥 she says). Upon her return, she was delighted to study under professors who interpreted science through Scripture, teaching a literal six-day creation and a historical space-time fall.
Outside the classroom, Pari pursued hands-on experiences. She volunteered at a guide dog center and an animal shelter. Through Master鈥檚, she signed on for a summer internship working with exotic animals like guinea pigs, turtles, rabbits, and snakes. She especially enjoyed caring for baby raccoons. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e small as kittens but incredibly strong,鈥 she says.
Pari鈥檚 experiences confirmed her desire to pursue veterinary medicine, and in 2020, she applied to UC Davis. She also left her job at Master鈥檚 and began working as a doctor’s assistant in the surgery department at a specialty animal hospital.
When asked by former co-workers to describe her new job, Pari often used humor. 鈥淚 said, 鈥榃ell, my boss at Master鈥檚 never put a dog spleen on my desk and said, 鈥楽end this off to the lab.鈥欌
However, it was no laughing matter when Pari received a phone call in January informing her she鈥檇 been accepted to Davis. 鈥淚 cried,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 believe it.鈥
Pari鈥檚 biggest fans weren鈥檛 as surprised.
鈥淗er journey is an example of how diligence and patience can result in great accomplishments, one step at a time,鈥 Cheryl says.
